Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best age to photograph newborns?

To capture the sleepy and curly poses it is best to photograph newborns under two weeks of age. If you have missed this age please get in touch as last minute sessions are available and I am happy to photograph newborns over this age – it just means there might be more awake images and some of the curly poses are not suitable for older newborns.

When is the best time to book a session?

Newborn sessions are best booked whilst you are still pregnant to secure your session. If your bub has already arrived please get in contact as last-minute sessions can often be accommodated.

For other sessions, it is best to book a couple of months ahead.

Where is your studio located?

My home studio is located in Collaroy Plateau on the Northern Beaches of Sydney.

How do I book a session?

If you would like to book a session please get in contact.

When a booking is made I take the session fee as a deposit to secure your session – it is transferable if someone is ill but not refundable.

When do I book a session date for my newborn session?

Once the session fee is paid I will pop your due date in my diary. When your little one arrives you just let me know in the first couple of days and we work out a suitable date for the photography session within the first two weeks.

Are the use of props included?

Yes 99% of the props you see on my website and social media is available for use at the studio and included in your session fee.

Do I need to decide what I want to purchase prior to the session date?

No, you only have to pay the session fee prior to the photography session date. Decisions about products/collections don’t need to be made until the Viewing and Ordering session where you get to see your edited gallery of images and decide what you would like to purchase.

How long is a photography session?

Newborn: Sessions start around 9:30/10:00am and take 2-3 hours depending on how sleepy your baby is and if there are any siblings. The session is never rushed and we take time to feed and settle when required.

Birth Photography: This is variable depending on the length of your labour. For more information about Birth Photography please get in contact.

All other sessions: Baby Bump, Baby/Child, Cake Smash and Family Sessions are 45 minutes to an hour.

Are you Immunised?

I am fully immunised including against Whooping Cough. Your family’s health is very important to me.

Do you have a working with Children’s Check?

Yes I hold a current Working with Children’s Check WWC0504813E

Is your business registered and do you have insurance?

Yes my business Hen Photography is registered with ASIC under the ABN 24 154 905 094.

My business holds public liability insurance and I take the safety of your family seriously.

Are parents and siblings included in newborn sessions?

Yes, newborn sessions include siblings and parents too. These are some of my favourite images to photograph. Sibling images work best when the older child/ren have been given the time at home to get to know their new brother or sister.

What if my newborn or another family member is sick on the day of the photoshoot?

If one of the people attending the photography session is ill please let me know as soon as possible. I will reschedule sessions when someone is ill.

What should we wear?

For images with yourself and/or partner with bub please bring some plain clothing (no big prints) for eg. white, black, pastel or neutral t shirts, singlets, dresses or strapless tops. It can get quite warm in the studio as the room will be heated up to make it comfortable for the baby so it’s a good idea for adults to wear layers.

For siblings neutral clothing also works well. It looks really cute if their arms are showing and not totally covered up with long sleeves. Small patterns on clothing are OK for siblings. Please bring siblings “photograph” clothes along with you rather than wearing them to the session to make sure they don’t get dirty before they have their photos taken.

Do we need to bring anything along?

Just bring your standard nappy bag goodies, unless you have something particular like a beanie or wrap you want to use. I have all the props in the studio – baskets, wraps, blankets, beanies, headbands etc.

If your little one is using a dummy please bring it along too as it can help with settling.

Feel free to bring along some lunch or snacks for yourselves. There are also a few shops close by to the studio where you can purchase food and drinks.

Will you still photograph my newborn if it is over two weeks of age?

Yes, I am happy to photograph newborns up to 2 months old. There is likely to be more awake images and older newborns are less likely to be able to go into the really curled up poses. I will still capture gorgeous images of your little one.

I missed the Newborn stage – when is another great age to capture?

All stages of your little one’s life are perfect for documenting however once your little one is sitting up unassisted (around 7-9 months) is a great age to capture their personality and big smiles. A 1 year old or Cake Smash session is also popular to document this milestone.

Are other family members included in Cake Smash Sessions?

No Cake Smash Sessions are just for bub. Having other children in the studio during a Cake Smash session can be distracting for your little one.

I’m interested in a Baby Bump session. Please tell me more.

Baby Bumps sessions can be either in the studio or outdoor at a local location for eg. the lake or beach and both with or without partner/older children. The decision is up to you. For studio sessions I start these around 9:30/10am and outdoor sessions are late afternoon around an hour before sunset or early morning for sunrise.

Either session is around 1 hour and best done between 32 and 36 weeks pregnant. The session can be done after this date but I find that mums to be are starting to get tired and not feel so fabulous plus you run the risk of the baby arriving early.

Do you do outdoor family sessions?

Yes I do. These sessions are best done once your littlest one is walking so they can run around with the rest of the family. These sessions are best done an hour before sunset when the light is the most flattering. Sunrise sessions are also available if your family are early risers.

Do you do Digital only package?

I do offer Digital Collections however these come with complimentary 5×7 inch prints so my clients can see the quality and colours of professional printing.

Do you sell framed prints, canvas and albums?

Yes I do. These are available to purchase as well as Digital Collections. Please get in contact for the full price/product list.

How long till I get to see my gallery of images?

A Sneak Peek image will be emailed to you within 2 days of your photography session. Your gallery of edited images will be ready for the Viewing and Ordering session within 2 weeks.
